  • About Monica Roberts Place

Monica Roberts Place, opening on February 1st, 2025, provides affordable, safe, and stable one-bedroom apartments as a permanent solution to homelessness for transgender people of color. This housing program, named in honor of Monica Roberts, a celebrated transgender griot and activist from Texas, serves as a tribute to her unwavering advocacy for trans rights and her work to elevate the voices of Black transgender people. Through her influential blog, TransGriot, Monica Roberts fought to bring attention to the struggles and experiences of trans women of color and to advocate for their dignity, justice, and equality.

Monica Roberts Place offers a welcoming environment with resources and support for individuals across a range of needs, including those who are transgender and living with HIV. The housing program is designed to provide security, stability, and support for Transgender folks experiencing housing insecurity, ensuring access to services in a safe and affirming space. Additionally, the program offers critical support for transgender youth aging out of foster care, helping them transition into adulthood with a solid foundation, affordable housing, and resources to build a brighter future.

Monica Roberts Place is a program of SistersPGH, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit founded and led by Black trans women, focused on providing supportive services, advocacy, and housing for transgender people of color. SistersPGH works to empower trans individuals, especially those from underserved communities, by offering safe spaces, critical resources, and opportunities for self-sufficiency and stability. Monica Roberts Place further embodies this mission, creating a place where transgender people of all backgrounds, including those living with HIV or transitioning from foster care, can access affordable housing, comprehensive support, and a strong community as they reclaim their futures.

Apartments are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, with rent set at 20%-25% of income. A portion of the rent is contributed to the Nest Egg Program, helping residents save for future housing opportunities or homeownership.

This project offers stable, affordable housing for those most in need, helping break the cycle of homelessness.
