  • AOF Golden Ticket Scholarship

    The UIWSOM Scholarship and Awards Commitee has been tasked with nominating (1) student from our medical school.

    Purpose
    Golden Ticket Scholarships recognize those who, despite financial obstacles, have achieved academic excellence, display exemplary leadership, give of themselves through volunteer/community activities, and embody Osteopathic tenants and philosophy.

    Scholarship
    Up to six (6) students will be selected as finalists and will each receive a $5,000 educational scholarship. One (1) of the finalists will be selected to receive AOF’s annual Golden Ticket and awarded an additional $15,000 educational scholarship. 

    Eligibility
    • OMS-II or OMS-III in good standing at a College/School of Osteopathic Medicine (COM/SOM) at the time of nomination.
    • Significant financial need affecting completion of education.
    • Demonstrated participation in school and community activities outside of any medical school requirements; may include leadership in professionally related organizations and activities while enrolled in Osteopathic
    medical school.
    • Prior Golden Ticket award winners are not eligible.
    • Current AOA membership. (Complimentary AOA student membership here.)

    APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
    ***must be submitted using the Scholarship/Awards Application Submission Portal Jotform (link found at very end of email) by Sunday, March 23, 2025***

    • A Letter of Good Standing from the Dean or their designee, confirming an outstanding academic standing.
    • A Letter of Financial Need from the Director of Financial Aid or their representative confirming that the student qualifies for financial aid and verification that, if received, this scholarship will not render the student ineligible for other financial aid opportunities or reduce the total aid they are receiving.
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation from the following list: academic medical instructor, Osteopathic physician, professional mentor, or similar professional within the Osteopathic profession, detailing the nominee’s contributions to the Osteopathic profession and/or their community service.
    • A one (1) page personal statement from the nominee explaining why financial need is negatively impacting their education.
    • Current curriculum vitae or resume (include memberships, Osteopathic or other), and a current photo.
    • Proof of AOA student membership.

     

  • AOF Presidential Memorial Leadership Award

    The UIWSOM Scholarship and Awards Commitee has been tasked with nominating (1) student from our medical school.

    Purpose
    This scholarship was created to recognize Osteopathic medical students, actively involved in the AOA, who are committed to the principles of Osteopathic medicine and who have taken great strides toward becoming top student leaders. These individuals have been instrumental in motivating people, and they take conscious, well-calculated steps to develop themselves and inspire others.

    Scholarship
    One (1) educational scholarship in the amount of $10,000 will be awarded to a student who exemplifies Osteopathic principles and best aligns with the scholarship purpose.

    Eligibility
    • Osteopathic medical student in good standing at a College/School of Osteopathic Medicine (COM/SOM) who will be an OMS-IV during the Fall semester of 2025.

    • Current AOA membership required. (Register for complimentary student membership here.)
    -Demonstrated commitment to the Osteopathic profession through word and deed.

    -Significant volunteer experience in the community (outside of COM/SOM requirements; volunteer experience need not be Osteopathic in nature).

    -Strong leadership skills, including leadership experience in an AOA, AACOM, State Association or Specialty College, or committee/workgroup experience in a national student medical organization (SOMA, COGSP, SNMA, MSPA, etc.).


    • Nominees should display the following characteristics and/or experiences:

    -Noteworthy accomplishments, awards and honors, special projects and extracurricular activities that demonstrate the nominee’s leadership abilities and experience.

    APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

    • A Letter of Good Standing from the Dean or their designee, as an official document confirming the student’s outstanding academic standing. The letter should also confirm that, if received, this scholarship will not render the student ineligible for other financial aid opportunities or reduce the total aid for which they are receiving from the COM/SOM.
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation from the following list: academic medical instructor, Osteopathic physician, professional mentor, or similar professional within the Osteopathic profession, providing specific, detailed examples of the nominee’s characteristics and experiences (commitment to Osteopathic profession; significant volunteer experience; strong leadership skills) that make them uniquely qualified for this award.
    • A one (1) page personal statement from the student nominee that outlines their exemplary leadership, service and character, as well as their commitment to Osteopathic medicine.
    • Current curriculum vitae or resume (include all current memberships, Osteopathic or other), and a personal photo
    • Proof of AOA student membership

     

  • AOF Sterling Welch, DO, Scholarship

    The UIWSOM Scholarship and Awards Commitee has been tasked with nominating (1) student from our medical school.

    Purpose
    Named in honor of Sterling Welch, DO, for his outstanding generosity to the AOF and his desire to support Osteopathic medical students and promote education, this grant was established to provide monetary aid to Osteopathic medical students. Each College/School of Osteopathic Medicine (COM/SOM) and branch campus may nominate one student who is in significant financial need to receive a $2,000 grant.


    Scholarship
    A scholarship award of $2,000 will be presented to one (1) student with financial constraints from each qualifying COM/SOM, branch campus, and location to help offset expenses associated with Osteopathic medical school.

    Eligibility
    • Current OMS II, III, or IV who was enrolled in the spring 2024 term.
    •Current AOA membership required to apply. (Register for complimentary AOA student membership here.)
    • Demonstrated significant financial need, and exemplifies at least 2 of the following additional requirements: strong academic acheivements, volunteer community service activities outside of college requirements, strong and clearly noticeable affinity for Osteopathic medicine. 
    • Prior Golden Ticket Scholarship finalists and recipients are ineligible for this award.

    1. A one (1) page personal statement from the nominee explaining how the educational grant will be used.
    2. Current curriculum vitae or resume (include memberships, Osteopathic or other), and a current photo.

  • Bexar County Medical Society Alliance Scholarship

    *Application window closes Monday, May 19th.*

    The UIWSOM Scholarship and Awards Commitee has been tasked with nominating two (2) students from our medical school who would best benefit from the Bexar County Medical Society scholarship, with at least one (1) identifying as Hispanic/Latino.

    The BCMS Alliance Scholarship Committee will choose one (1) of these students as the scholarship recipient.

    CRITERIA

    • Must be a resident of Bexar or adjacent county
    • Must be a second year student (or higher) attending a MD or DO medical school in Bexar County
    • Must have a sound moral character
    • University students must maintain a 3.5 GPA (not applicable to UIWSOM students)
    • Medical students must be considered in “good academic standing.”

    APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

    1. Personal statement detailing what inspired you to pursue the practice of medicine and future career goals

  • Nancy Ann Wilson Scholarship
    *Application deadline for 2025 has passed. Applicants will be notified once results have been finalized.*

    Nancy Ann Wilson spent most of her life in San Antonio, graduated from Alamo Heights High School, the University of the Incarnate Word, and the Baptist Hospital School of Medical Technology. After her retirement from laboratory work, she became a Blue Bird Volunteer at the Methodist Hospital, volunteering 2 and 3 days a week. Though Ms. Wilson passed in 2016, her names lives on through scholarships to UIW students.

      

    Eligibility Requirements

    1. Must be currently enrolled as an osteopathic medical student.

    2. Must be in good standing at UIWSOM.

    3. Must have a 2024-2025 FAFSA on file with the Office of Financial Assistance and demonstrate financial need.

     

    Application Instructions

    1. A 300-word statement addressing the question “How do non-physician team members enhance humanistic patient care?” (The word count is strictly enforced.) 

    2. CV including a brief description of community activities and the number of hours completed.

     

  • Barad Seidenfeld Family Osteopathic Medical Student Endowed Scholarship

    The Endowment is established in loving memory of Glenn K. Seidenfeld, Mary Lou Seidenfeld, Leonard Barad and in honor of Marilyn Barad to celebrate their love of education.

      

    Eligibility Requirements

    1. Must be currently enrolled as an osteopathic medical student.

    2. Must be in good standing at UIWSOM.

    3. Must have a 2024-2025 FAFSA on file with the Office of Financial Assistance and demonstrate financial need.

    This scholarship was created for students who come from South Texas and strive to continue in their higher education journey.

      

    Eligibility Requirements

    1. Must be currently enrolled as an osteopathic medical student.

    2. Must be in good standing at UIWSOM.

    3. Must have a 2024-2025 FAFSA on file with the Office of Financial Assistance and demonstrate financial need.
